Matt’s Gallery is a contemporary non-profit art gallery and a charity, established 38 years ago in East London and currently located in Bermondsey, South East London. During this time, Matt’s Gallery has been an independent and influential force in the visual arts sector, both nationally and internationally. It has championed the careers of artists such as Mike Nelson, Turner Prize nominee in 2001 and 2007; Susan Hiller, who had a major retrospective at Tate in 2011 and Nathaniel Mellors who is representing Finland at the 2017 Venice Biennale.
Matt’s Gallery exists to support artists with the space and time to take risks, test their limits and surprise even their own intentions. We place equal emphasis on the gestation of the work and the final exhibition, providing the best conditions for experiencing art and challenging audiences. It has established and maintained a vital and distinctive collaborative approach to working with artists, acting as an essential thinking space away from the pressures of the commercial environment.
We maintain a core model of commissioning approx. 4 artists per year, partnership projects, an in-house publishing series, digital platforms, public events, screenings and talks, and touring across the UK and internationally.
