Maternity Worldwide’s vision is of a world in which all women and their babies can access safe and appropriate childbirth regardless of where they live.
Our mission is to work with communities and our partners to:
We provide integrated maternal health programmes in areas of sub-Saharan Africa where the need is greatest and where the number of women dying during pregnancy or childbirth is greatest.
We address the delays women face when trying to access safe and appropriate healthcare through our integrated approach to maternal health which;
• Provides communities with essential information on maternal and newborn healthcare, particularly the risks to look for during pregnancy and when to seek medical help.
• Empowers women by providing opportunities for them to set up their own businesses, enabling them to become financially independent and to become the decision makers about their own sexual and reproductive healthcare and ultimately leaders within their communities.
• Improves access to health centres and hospitals through the provision of motorbike ambulances, rural health centres, outreach workers providing maternal healthcare in the villages (including; ante-natal screening so women at-risk of a complicated delivery are identified early and advised to deliver at the appropriate health centre or hospital and the provision waiting houses next to health centres where women can stay 2 weeks before their due date so when they go into labour skilled help is nearby).
• Training local healthcare workers to become skilled birth attendants and midwives.
• Providing the equipment and resources needed at hospitals and health centres and improving referral systems between healthcare providers.
