The Maldon Pioneers Association (MPA) is a registered charity providing social activities and friendship opportunities for its members, the Pioneers, who are adults with mild to moderate learning disabilities. Formed nearly 40 years ago MPA continues to be a vibrant and committed organisation, which arranges and develops a variety of activities throughout the year to support its Pioneers, and help prevent them from becoming isolated, lonely and disengaged from the local community.
The MPA employs a part-time Activities Organiser (AO), who plans and develops the activities programme. These include weekly exercise sessions, a drop-in club and IT skills development, cinema and theatre outings, ten-pin bowling visits to local attractions and an annual holiday in the UK. However, at the heart of that provision is our team of volunteers, without whom the organisation could not function.
It is recognised that there are many adults with learning difficulties living within the local Maldon area who are unaware of the Maldon Pioneers and who we could help. As a consequence the MPA recently began a review of its rôle in the community, in order to expand its reach, build capacity locally, and support more Pioneers. This is a considerable challenge and needs new ideas and experience to help shape and direct the programme.
Taking on the Treasurer’s responsibilities is a great opportunity for you to be involved at the start of this new era, working with other trustees, the AO and volunteers.
