London Youth Rowing (LYR) is a ground breaking sports charity, which promotes the sport of rowing and other forms of physical activity for young people across the capital.
We believe that rowing has the power to deliver whole-life benefits and our inspiring programmes encourage young people to be active and participate in a unique sport - indoor and on-water rowing - across London, regardless of background, ethnicity, gender, sexuality, disability or ability. We help develop crucial life skills, improve physical, social and mental well-being, and nurture determination and success in next generation.
Over the past year alone LYR has opened-up access to rowing for over 7,000 young people, with a special focus on those who “don’t do sport” or who would not normally try a new sport. We have an established an apprenticeship programme and have continued to build our pioneering Life Skills Breaking Barriers programme. Our indoor rowing programmes flourished at clubs based in over 70 schools and saw us roll out a series of successful indoor rowing competitions as part of our “Active Row” Programme – a four-year initiative supported by Sport England and Tideway. In February this year we hosted our annual event - The National Junior Indoor Rowing Championships (NJIRC) at the Copper Box Arena on the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park where we welcomed 2,000 young people from across the country to one of the largest indoor rowing events in the world. On the water, in the past year alone nearly 3,000 young people participated in our junior clubs, now at five centres, with notable successes for young rowers at regattas and in a silver medal at the Junior World Rowing Championships.
