Objectives

LONDON UNEMPLOYED STRATEGIES (LUS) has been formed by trades unionists, the unemployed and their supporters.

LUS aims to give a voice to unemployed people to counteract the abuses and attacks made upon them by the government, the mass media and organisations such as The Taxpayers (‘work for the dole’) Alliance.

LUS will also seek to give unemployed people the support and training they need to express their demands and issues affecting them in the most effective way possible so as to bring about real change.

Activities

We run 'Stand Up For Your Rights' workshops all around London. These are capacity-building support groups for claimants who are trained with knowledge they need to deal with problems with Jobcentre Plus, the DWP, the Work Programme and other agencies affecting their lives. Through encouraging peer support and sharing experiences, claimants are given the confidence to support themselves and each other in asserting their rights in a positive, non-threatening way.

LUS also encourages claimants to join a trades union (Unite Community) and engage in London wide and national campaigns around sanctions, the Welfare Charter, the Housing Bill and other issues in an effort to promote a decent quality of life and income regardless of employment status.
