Geographical remit:

The Hub's core purpose is twofold:

1. The prevention or relief of poverty primarily but not exclusively in Southeast London by providing: grants, items, and services to individuals in need and/or charities or other organisations working to prevent or relieve poverty

2. To promote for the public benefit primarily but not exclusively in Southeast London the protection and preservation of the environment by working to minimise waste and achieve reductions in greenhouse gas emissions and raw material use through the provision of community resource sharing, re-use, and repair initiatives

In a nutshell - Lewisham Donation Hub diverts waste from that would otherwise go to landfill, reuses or refurbishes it for reuse and then gives it away for free to those in need.

In a bit more detail - Lewisham Donation Hub was set up by Laurence Smith during the Covid-19 pandemic to deliver essentials to those who were shielding and to frontline workers who were finding it difficult to buy food.

Over the past two and a half years, the project has expanded in size and scope. It has evolved into an essential, and relied upon, local service for people facing hardship. Operating from a previously unused co-working space at Place Ladywell in Lewisham, it now supports over 500 individuals directly every week.

Anyone can access the Lewisham Donation Hub; no one needs a referral. The Lewisham Donation Hub is there, to serve members of the community in their time of need, for however long they need support.

Support includes the provision of food, household items, toiletries, clothes, essential electricals, digital devices, homeware, toys, bicycles, appliances and furniture as well as signposting to other vital services.

The overwhelming majority of material support distributed by the Hub is donated by the local community, businesses and other organisations and it is all shared free of charge.

Outside our opening hours, the week is full of receiving and organising donations, managing volunteers and matching supplies of larger items (furniture, white goods) with those in need. In addition, The Hub frequently advocates on behalf of beneficiaries with Lewisham Council and central government.

Lewisham Donation Hub gained charitable status (Reg No 1202607) in April 2023.
