Objectives

Our mission is simple – to help individuals and communities rebuild their own lives after the trauma of war. We believe in providing the tools, training, education and other support – whether it be physical, psychological or economic – that enables those we work with to shape their own futures.

Founded in 2017 by photographer Giles Duley, a triple amputee, Legacy of War Foundation also advocates for NO MORE WAR and strives to create awareness about the long-term effects of war on civilians through photography and art.

Activities

We set up Legacy of War Foundation because we wanted to do things differently, to challenge the traditional neo-colonial concepts in the aid sector, and design a model that is led by our beneficiaries (we prefer ‘partners’). Since 2017, we’ve raised over £700000 to support communities impacted by conflict with sustainable, partner-led projects around the world.

Our flagship program, Land for Women, which combines sustainable cooperative farming with an innovative land transfer model, and reflects our priorities of sustainability, affordability and education. Each cooperative lifts up to a hundred female genocide survivors and their families out of poverty in Rwanda.

In Lebanon and Europe, we support vulnerable Syrian refugees with complex needs.

This year, we have been responding to the crisis in Ukraine, working alongside our partners on the ground to support marginalised groups including adults and children living with disabilities and the LGBTQ+ community.

Our other activities including community gardening projects; advocacy and campaigning; and education, to help young people understand the impact of war.

NO MORE WAR

The past twenty years has seen a Western foreign policy based on war in the Middle East and Afghanistan. In 2021, we worked with VENT to launch No More War with a series of artistic collaborations, beginning with our video with Massive Attack. Join us and demand: No More War here.

EDUCATION

Our CEO and founder Giles Duley speaks regularly to children and young people around the world on a range of topics, from Legacy of War Foundation’s work and his own experiences living with disability, to photojournalism, the impact of conflict, and ethical storytelling.

ADVOCACY

We are committed to widening the discourse about the impact of war on civilians and its long-term consequences. Find out more about how we advocate effectively for survivors of conflict.

COLLABORATION

Purposeful partnership and collaboration with our projects, other organisations, artists and business are key to our work.

HASTINGS GROWS

With the support of Random Acts, we are using the skills we’ve honed on our Land for Women program to build a community-led garden project for the Hastings area. As well as tackling food insecurity, we’ll be providing targeted support for refugees and asylum seekers, building connections with our projects around the world, and developing design-led adaptive gardening tools to ensure community and market gardening are accessible and inclusive for people with disabilities.
