Since 2009, Learn English Together in Merton (formerly Merton Home Tutoring Service) have been providing free English lessons to adults living in and around the London borough of Merton.
Lessons are offered in their own homes or in our group classes, which follow the ESOL (English Speakers of Other Languages) curriculum. We are a small independent charity.
We offer lessons for people who are not able to get to formal college classes, because of cost, family situation or disability and who may become isolated at home.
. We are the main provider in the London Borough of Merton of pre-entry ESOL learning.
We provide free ESOL community classes to migrants and refugees. Our classes are for learners in small groups in community centres in the London Borough of Merton. We also deliver one to one tutoring in a learner's own home, usually once a week. We aim to teach learners everyday English to help them do tasks like talking to a doctor, discussing their child's progress with a teacher, talking to neighbours and learning about life in the UK.
Our learners are mainly women with young families who are unable to go to formal college classes for a range of reasons: class shortages, particularly at low ability levels; the high cost of the classes; the lack of crèche facilities at colleges; and the need to be at home for their young family or for complex healthcare needs.
Our learners are potentially a valuable asset to the UK, but they often face multiple challenges such as being unable to train or to find work. Even if they previously worked at a higher level in their country of origin, the jobs they are likely to find in Merton are at a very low level, due to their lack of English.
