The Language of Dance® Centre UK, based in the London borough of Tower Hamlets, was established in 1967 by Dr Ann Hutchinson Guest and registered as a charity in 1980. We deliver dance tuition in primary, secondary and special educational needs schools, as well as CPD training courses and resources for teachers.
Our mission is to make creative movement and dance experience available to people of all ages, genders, cultural background and abilities, through the use of the inclusive Language of Dance teaching method.
The aims of the LODC are:
At present our main projects include:
Dance Moves – Delivered free of charge for students in East London primary schools, sessions promote physical literacy and help children to develop team work, communication and confidence. Using LOD provides opportunities for students to create their own choreography, for many it offers the chance for an additional way to express themselves and for all provides an extra physical activity session during the school day.
Level 1 Award in Special Educational Needs Schools – We have developed a customised accredited Award that is accessible to young people with special educational needs and physical disabilities. For many this will be their first opportunity to take part in a dance award.
Teacher Training - as a legacy of the charities 50th anniversary (celebrated in 2017) we are aiming to train 50 teachers across the UK to deliver the Level 1 Award in their school, college and community setting. The award is suitable for people of all ages and abilities and we are looking to work with teachers working in settings where dance is not currently offered.
The Language of Dance Centre believes that everyone can dance and should be given the opportunity to do so. We hope that through our current projects we can to reach those most in need of the chance to dance!
