Just be a Child (JBAC) inspires Kenyan children to read by building and supporting community run libraries, because we believe that with inspiration, knowledge and hope every community can lead themselves out of poverty.
We collect books in the UK, ship them to Kenya in a 40ft container and with the help of the Kenyan communities convert the container into a free public library.
We train community volunteer librarians and provide continuous support. We also work with locals and train them as community teachers and introduce, among others, arts and crafts classes and sports days. Lastly, we build playgrounds as a first step in engaging with our new partner communities.
By 2032 we aim to have built and supported 10 community libraries.
We collect books from schools, individuals and organisations. The books range from smallest of children to teenagers, fiction, romance and drama, reference books including dictionaries, cookery books and gardening.
We buy a 40ftt container, fill it with the donations and ship it to Kenya. There, with the help of the local community and UK volunteers, we converted it into a free community run library.
We train librarians and engage with the wider community by organising sports days, arts and crafts classes and much more. We also build a playground.
