Objectives

Wheatley Nursery School (WNS) and John Watson School (JWS), are two schools within a federation. The two schools share a governing body as well as a headteacher.

Founded in 1993, WNS is a mainstream nursery school for children aged between 2 and 5 and serves the village of Wheatley as well as several other local villages across South Oxfordshire.

Founded in 1966, JWS is a special school for children aged between 2 and 19 who have severe, complex or profound learning difficulties. The school serves pupils from both rural and urban areas across Oxfordshire.

Both schools are maintained by the local authority, Oxfordshire County Council.

Activities

WNS aims to provide a safe, secure and stimulating environment which encourages children to value themselves and its mission is to help pupils to develop a strong set of practical, educational, emotional and life skills.  Staff work closely with all pupils in order to understand how each individual child learns, so that they can maximise the learning experience in the early years.

JWS' tailors its teaching and curriculum to meet the needs of each individual pupil. The focus is on motivating pupils and engaging them to think, to challenge and to be curious, with an emphasis on teaching pupils about how to stay safe, to develop life skills and communication skills, as well as helping them to become independent learners.

Staff in both schools also work closely with the governing body, whose role it is to monitor the schools and strategically plan for the schools' ongoing development to meet the needs of its pupils, present and future.

Both schools also work closely with parents and carers, recognising that parents and carers are key to supporting children's learning outside of school.
