Jeevika is a Hindi word best translated as ‘livelihood’. For us the term ‘livelihood’ goes beyond just making a living, to embrace all the primary conditions for a viable, dignified and hopeful existence.
Projects implemented by JT- span a range of locations and diverse interventions ranging from women’s livelihood projects based on mint-farming, bee-keeping, bamboo craft, goat-rearing, through community-based drought response (women artisan training) and deepening democracy (panchayati raj training), to tsunami response (boat repairs and mobile hospital) and more recently rainwater-harvesting revival and socio-economic support to villagers living with HIV/AIDS.Cross-cutting elements’ which need to be addressed in all our projects:
• Training – systematic training opportunities are key to every kind of project – from goat-rearing or bee-keeping for women’s income generation, to awareness-building for HIV/Aids and village democracy.
• Gender equality – traditional discrimination against women in almost every aspect of life is a barrier to individual self-fulfilment and community life. Women are pivotal to livelihood development.
• Environment – awareness and sustainable management of natural resources including care of trees, land, and water resources’, recycling etc.
• Village democracy – women's involvement in village decision-making and participation of village leaders and communities in project development.
