Objectives

The Society exists to celebrate the nineteenth century British author Jane Austen through meeting the following aims:

  • promote the appreciation and study of the life, work and times of Jane Austen and the Austen family
  • secure the preservation of the manuscripts, letters and memorabilia of Jane Austen and the Austen family
  • continue a programme of scholarly publications concerning Jane Austen and the Austen family
  • support the work of Jane Austen’s House, Chawton

Activities

Events include lectures, discussion groups, study days, visits to locations linked directly or indirectly to the author and the period, weekend excursions, and social occasions. They offer both a stimulating source of information and ideas, and an opportunity to meet other people sharing a similar interest in the author, her life and her writing.

Branches are an integral part of the Jane Austen Society and therefore share the Society’s charitable status.  They organise a wide range of activities for members throughout the year.
