Jacari is a charity with two branches, Oxford and Bristol, that supports disadvantaged children age 6-16 who speak English as an additional language, by providing them with free 1:1 home tuition.
Our vision is equality of opportunity and aspiration for children and young people who do not speak English as their first language and are at risk of failing to achieve their academic potential. Our aims are to improve the lives of children and young people who do not speak English as their first language by increasing their:
Language ability and other academic skills
General confidence and motivation
Ability to engage with and contribute to school life and the wider community/society
Local children who are in need of EAL support are referred to us by their schools. We recruit and train around 200 student volunteers, from the Universities of Oxford, Oxford Brookes and Bristol, and match each pupil individually with a volunteer tutor. The tutor visits their home for an hour per week, helping them with their English language skills, schoolwork and confidence.
