Islington Law Centre provides high quality, free, independent advice and legal representation to enable people to improve their lives; and seeks to influence law, policy and practice.
We work with people on low or no incomes, who could not afford to pay for a lawyer.
We offer help to people with consumer, debt, education, employment, housing, immigration/asylum, public law and welfare benefit issues and have 3 specialist projects - the Migrants' Law Project, Migrant and Refugee Children's Legal Unit and StreetLegal (a project tackling youth homelessness).
We take services out into the community, with at least 17 outreach sessions each week, and last year one of our outreach services reduced poverty in the borough by over £1m.
We have great support from City law firms, and offer 3 evening advice clinics each week with pro bono volunteers.
One of our strengths is that we can help people right from early advice through to representation in the Courts or Tribunal system if required, and we regularly take cases of strategic importance. We employ a team of very experienced solicitors and caseworkers, and have an active caseload of around 1,250 cases at any one time.
We have a passionate and committed staff team, who are assisted by a group of volunteers, enabling us to help more people and to go the extra mile for our clients.
Many of our clients are vulnerable, and some are homeless and/or without any income. Legal assistance is crucial in helping people to achieve a long term improvement in their circumstances - quotes from our clients show what a difference we can make:-
"You just did a brilliant job and you did everything to save my home and help me. Thank you".
‘Thank you so much for helping me through a very difficult time in my life – I will always be very grateful to you’
‘I would give the Law Centre number 1 every time’
