Objectives

Hugo's Earthquake is a homelessness awareness campaign started in 2015. It uses media, blog posts, articles and talks to challenge the perceptions of homelessness and the reasons why people become homeless. Coming from an experience of homelessness myself and using external research on the issue to inform our messaging, the Campaign uses media and social media to push its messages.

A key part of our work has been to challenge local authorities and charities about failures in their services which impact homeless people or those at risk of homelessness. We have been successful in securing a Safeguarding Adults Review into 5 homeless deaths in Worcestershire.

The service matters because there it is not funded by one particular person (currently it's not funded by anyone) meaning that we can challenge freely and not be restricted to holding a particular line or viewpoint. We hold the homeless charities and people in power to account.

We are changing our organisation to become a fully registered Charity by July 2020 with the following enhanced aims:

  • Championing the need for better services by ensuring the service-user voice will be integral to its work
  • Seeking to run outreach services where there is a service need
  • Supporting rough sleepers and the homeless to access services and advocate on their behalf
  • Creating locality (area) forums for the benefit of the homeless and vulnerable
  • Championing the need and assist in reviewing deaths of rough sleepers and vulnerable people
  • Co-ordinating and develop research around homelessness
  • Creating the first national LGBT homeless advisory panel for Government
  • Running structured campaigns on the issue of homelessness.

Activities

We currently have a volunteer press officer who writes our press releases and these are then checked and sent out to journalists. Our social media is vital to challenge charities and people in power and hold them to account. Since 2015, the website has had daily visitors reading our research, blog posts, articles and comment. We also attend events and take part in talks.
