Objectives

Horticap is a local independent charity and social enterprise working primarily with adults with a learning disability, but also those with a more complex and/ or multiple disabilities.  We offer our students a wide range of learning and development opportunities mainly focused around horticulture and land based skills with the opportunity to gain a nationally recognised qualification. This is augmented by sessions in art, craft, retail and social/life skills. Whilst the main focus of our operation is based at our Bluecoat Wood site students also have the opportunity to join one of our two off-site teams undertaking commercial garden maintenance in the local community.

Activities

We deliver our training and education activities from the Bluecoat Wood Nursery situated on Otley Road, Harrogate, close to RHS Harlow Carr Gardens.  The site covers nearly four acres and consists of beautiful gardens, a wildlife area, pond, bird hide, dingly dell, beehives, numerous glasshouses, workshop, recycling building, sales tunnels, shop and tea room with an external patio overlooking the extensive gardens which also contain a metal sculpture park donated by local artists.  Our adjacent administration area also contains a board room which is used for art exhibitions on a regular basis and for art classes for the students.

Our educational activity is supported by a dedicated team of qualified and experienced staff members and volunteers whose main aims are to:

  • Give respect and dignity to our students.
  • - Commit to providing high quality training and care.
  • - Be compassionate.
  • - Improve students’ lives.
  • - Work together for the benefit of the students
