Home-Start Wandsworth provides emotional and practical support to families with children under 5ys and pregnant mothers. We training volunteers to provide home visits, befriending and peer support in hubs, to families who are finding certain things hard to manage i.e. multiple births, physical disabilities, stress, financial issues and isolation.
The main of Home-Start Wandsworth is to support a local family and make a difference that lasts a lifetime. In the Core Scheme and Bump To Baby Project, volunteers visit a family and/or pregnant woman in their home to provide emotional and practical support. They offer befriending to reduce isolation, enhance social inclusion so children engage with their peers and empower families to develop skills and strategies to cope with everyday life.
Every volunteer attends the Home-Start Preparation (Prep) Course which lasts 10weeks in total (excluding half terms). They are interviewed, DBS checked and provide references. Once matched with a family, volunteers are expected to attend ongoing training and supervision.
Volunteers also support the Hubs Project. Families can attend any of the hubs based in four Wandsworth locations and receive peer support and/or learning. Volunteers deliver and/or co-facilitate session designed to address the needs of families and enhance parenting skills and children’s’ experiences.
Volunteers are usually parents or have parenting experiences, live in Wandsworth or surrounding boroughs and can commit to Home-Start for a minimum of one year.
