Home-Start Northampton (HSN) is a registered charity, founded in 1982, to support the care, safety and upbringing of children from struggling and vulnerable families. We work with 70 families and 100+ children each year offering 1-1 volunteer-led support at home and through family group sessions, to reduce parental and family isolation and tackle disadvantage. For 40 years HSN has helped families with children to overcome, often multiple, challenges they are facing. We also support parents by demonstrating the key role they have to play in their child’s development, in order to give their child the best start in life, strengthen their family unit and build family resilience.

We match trained volunteers with families to offer long or short term face to face support in their own homes, after agreeing the key areas they want help with.  To address the lengthening waiting list we are trialling offering phone, virtual shorter support to families where the need is simpler.  We also have started 3 family drop in sessions, with a particular emphasis on our Ukrainian fleeing population with two groups and a general one every week for those on our waiting list, and past families.  The two groups are run by a trained Ukrainian refugee and is extremely well received. We offer advice, signposting, play, talks, befriending, peer support etc.  In addition we have trialled a father and co-parent group, in partnership with other organisations, which was very well supported and received.

As  with post charities post-Covid, we are struggling with volunteers, and these determine how many families we can see.
