Objectives

Home-Start Essex -  Helping families give their children the best start in life.

Home-Start Essex is part of a large nationally federated organisation Home-Start UK (HSUK) with over 50 years experience of supporting families with young children struggling to cope with the many challenges they face. We recruit and train volunteers to support families, by offering emotional and practical support, in their own homes, over the phone and in groups to build the confidence, skills and strength of parents to nurture their children. This friendly supportive model is a simple yet effective way of enabling families to get back on track and to help children get the best start in life.

Home-Start Essex is a registered charity operated as a company limited by guarantee.

The Board of Directors of the company are also Trustees of the charity.

Activities

Working together with families in support of family life we aim to increase their confidence and independence by:

  • Providing a volunteer with parenting experience or experience of working with families and children to visit parents with young children at home
  • Offering support, friendship, practical experience and a listening ear
  • Reassuring parents that difficulties in bringing up children are not unusual and encouraging enjoyment of family life
  • Encouraging the parents’ strength and emotional well-being for the ultimate benefit of the children
  • Encouraging families to widen the network of relationships and effectively use support and services available within the community.

We match a fully trained volunteer to support the family with both emotional and practical help that is free, confidential and non-judgemental.  They work to tested and high quality standards and procedures and all volunteers are DBS (Disclosure and Barring Service) checked.  They empower the families to develop strategies to manage their difficulties, enable them to gain confidence in their parenting ability and encourage them to access local services and networks within the wider community, giving the children the best possible start in life.
