Objectives

Home-Start Calderdale is here because every parent should have the support they need to give their children the best possible start in life. Our committed and caring volunteers, who are usually parents themselves, offer friendship and informal support to parents with young children under five during difficult times in their lives. They visit families at home and are friendly, approachable people who are relied on and trusted by parents to listen without being judgmental, and to respect the needs of each individual family. We support families who are struggling with a variety of issues including family breakdown, illness or disability (physical or mental), lack of confidence, anxiety, domestic violence, loneliness or simply lots of small children. A volunteer can bring the fun and love back into a family with kindness, patience and a good dose of humour. We support parents as they grow in confidence, strengthen their relationship with their children and widen their links in the community - and the goal is always to support a family to a stage where they don't need us anymore!

Activities

Our trained volunteers will visit a family once a week for about 2 ½ hours and offer understanding that, when bringing up children, many problems are not unusual and reassurance that parents are not alone. They will also offer a listening ear and advice where appropriate, alongside an extra pair of hands to help parents cope with everyday situations, whether that’s in the home or support to keep appointments or simply to get out and about. Practical help can also include help around the house to improve home conditions or establish good routines. Activities with children can involve supporting their development/learning as well as school readiness and social & emotional wellbeing.
