Objectives

Holborn Community Association (HCA) is a vital community anchor organisation with over 25 years of experience in supporting Holborn’s disadvantaged residents. Working in partnership with a wide range of organisations, HCA supports over 1,000 individuals in need each week, including children and young people, older people, those with disabilities and those most vulnerable or disadvantaged. Incorporated in 1989, HCA operates as an inclusive centre supporting anyone whatever their gender, ethnic, social or political background. The charity operates from three hubs: Bedford House Community Centre, Millman Street Community Centre and 1A Arts Centre in the heart of Holborn.

These services deliver short and long-term outcomes for individuals living in Holborn. These include:

  • Improved employability for those struggling to access mainstream facilities;
  • Improving fitness levels and physical well-being for disadvantaged young people;
  • Increased levels of sporting and creative skills to develop and integrate the Holborn community;
  • Increased confidence for disadvantaged groups;
  • Reducing isolation for marginalised and socially excluded people.

The combination of changes at an individual level makes a substantial and wider impact at a Community level. These activities increase resilience, with a Holborn Community empowered to support each other increase social cohesion, fostering a unique community spirit leading with Holborn, reducing isolation and reducing economic and social disparities within the community.

HCA delivers a range of programmes in collaboration with the community (and in partnership with external organisations). These programmes, which include development opportunities, arts activities, outreach work and more, are available to anyone within Holborn and the surrounding area, and are provided free or at a reduced cost to ensure maximum reach and impact.

Examples include:

  • A substantial arts offering, supporting the development of over 245 disadvantaged children and young people, through film projects, media classes, and dance workshops. This is vital to their creative development and their transition through life.
  • Comprehensive and supportive services for older people and disadvantaged groups, supporting over 335 attendees each week, including trips to Kew Gardens, peer and intergenerational support, befriending, volunteering and social action groups.
  • 15 varieties of sport and physical activities, including tai chi, gymnastics (including coaching development and schools outreach), yoga, and ballet provided by HCA, supporting over 550 attendees each week, advancing their health, wellbeing, and personal growth.
