Objectives

The British Schools Museum is uniquely placed to portray the history of elementary education and the social history of childhood from the late 18th century, through to the late 1960's.  A complex of schools buildings dating from 1837 to 1905 house a large and fascinating collection which includes textiles, books, furniture, photographs and artefacts related to childhood education.  We help to bring learning to life and regularly entertain educational, school and community groups, and visitors from around the country with our interactive visitor experiences.

Activities

Our purpose is to preserve our unique buildings and collections so that our communities continue to enjoy and discover the history of learning.

To do this we;

  • Deliver a living experience of school days to all
  • Preserve our environment as a space for community events, meetings and weddings
  • Maintain, repair, conserve and restore our historic buildings
  • Preserve and develop our collection as an authentic resource for the history of learning
