Objectives

The objects of the CIO are for the public benefit to act as a resource for young people with disabilities up to the age of 25 living in Dorset and the surrounding areas by providing advice and assistance and organising programmes of physical, educational and other activities as a means of advancing in life and helping young people by developing their skills, capacities and capabilities to enable them to participate in society as independent, mature and responsible individuals.

Activities

  • Hipp!!Bones meets on the 1st & 3rd Saturday of the month at Gillingham Youth and Community Centre
  • Term-time sessions are usually 2 hours in duration, with longer sessions in the school holidays for off-site trips
  • The club caters for young people aged between 11-19 years of age; but continues to provide a vital service to members up to the age of 25
  • The club is fully wheelchair accessible, and has mobile hoisting facilities available
  • Hipp!!Bones has a calm, friendly atmosphere, and is staffed by three trained and experienced staff that provides high quality care and provision
  • All our sessions are varied and interesting and provide opportunities to participate in arts & crafts, cooking, and sports activities
  • Activities are appropriately differentiated to meet each young person’s needs, sessions are structured giving a sense of security, and staff communicate using simple language reinforced with alternative and augmentative communication, visual clues and sign language.
  • We have communication aids; switches and switch activated resources to enable young people with Profound and Multiple Learning Difficulties (PMLD) participate independently in activities and have greater control over their immediate environment

Hipp!!Bones supports and empowers young people who are disabled to live the life they choose and achieve their full potential. We understand how difficult the journey can be to find the right provision to meet the needs of young people with special educational needs and disabilities, which is why Hipp!!Bones is hugely important to its members and the community it serves. The club enables these young people to meet in a safe environment, where they can meet with friends outside school, socialise and form new friendships, and acquire the skills necessary to become more independent as they move into adulthood.
