Objectives

Herts Young Carers is a group that meets to provide respite and emotional and practical support to young carers through recreational activities. Young carers are children and young people who look after someone in their family who has an illness, a disability, or is affected by mental ill-health or substance misuse. Young carers often take on practical and/or emotional caring responsibilities that would normally be expected of an adult.

We give support to local children and young people, who perform this caring role supporting another member of their household.

Our Young Carers Group is a community-based initiative wholly led by volunteers.  We were previously part of a large charity who withdrew all funding due to their own reduced funding.  We could not let it close! The children love this Group.  Since May 2013 we have doubled the number of children and young people attending.  Through our fundraising we have taken the children on two residential trips, been bowling, and generally given them many opportunities that they would otherwise be denied by their circumstances.

Activities

The Group meets fortnightly to give emotional and practical support to Young Carers through recreational activities.  We provide the young carers with respite and peer support in a safe and fun environment.

The sessions run fortnightly during term-time on a Thursday evening from 7.00 – 9.00pm.  We generally run three different themed activities per session: sports / exercise based activity, a cookery activity and an arts and crafts ‘project’.  There is always badminton and table tennis available and a variety of games from board games to karaoke.  The cookery session may involve making biscuits, cakes, home made pizzas, etc.  The craft sessions cover a variety of ideas from card-making, badges and modelling.
