Objectives

Herne Hill Welcomes Refugees is a Community Sponsorship Group based in and around Herne Hill.  The group works to welcome refugee families to the area.  So far HHWR has sponsored two families (from Iraq and Syria). Community Sponsorship is a government scheme which gives groups and communities the chance to  resettle a refugee family in their area. Community Sponsorship is a unique way to ensure that families who have suffered the trauma of conflict and displacement can settle in the UK with the support of the local community.  We are looking to welcome a third family to Herne Hill, who otherwise may not be able to settle permanently anywhere.

Activities

The group must raise sufficient funds, find and furnish a suitable property, secure school places, complete the Home Office application, and prepare enough volunteers to welcome, befriend and support the family for at least a year after arrival in the UK.

HHWR needs people to do all sorts of things from working directly with our refugee families as a befriender or translator to fundraising and comms.  But at the moment we are particularly seeking people willing to take on leadership roles to lead the group towards bringing a third refugee family to our local area.
