Objectives

We work closely with London Boroughs and Historic England to remove problem or difficult buildings from the Heritage at Risk register, working in partnership with local authorities, housing associations, NHS Trusts, community groups and other building preservation trusts.

The Trust operates in a similar way to any developer, though for HOLTOP, the objective is conservation rather than profit.

We also act as a facilitator, assisting local authorities, community groups and trusts to move their own projects forward.

Activities

Heritage of London Trust Operations was founded in 1992 as a building preservation trust and is a charitable company limited by guarantee. The Trust works across the Greater London area, usually in partnership with local authorities and Historic England, to find new uses for buildings at risk. It assembles grant aid, and oversees the capital works, acting as a professional client. On completion of the project, it either sells the property on, or retains the freehold, leasing it to a local organisation. It steps in where a private developer is deterred by a site’s heritage status, and/or where the cost of heritage-led development leaves a deficit.
