In humanitarian crises, older people are amongst the most vulnerable. As population ageing transforms low- and middle-income countries as well as richer countries, ever more, older people are affected by conflict and disasters. HelpAge International is the only international NGO dedicated to ensuring older people receive humanitarian assistance and protection.
In the humanitarian field:
- We work in partnership with national organisations to provide older people with the support they need in humanitarian crises. In particular we focus on healthcare, nutrition support, livelihoods/incomes and humanitarian protection.
- We conduct research and operational learning on key issues to generate evidence on how older people are affected in humanitarian crises and how they can be assisted and supported.
- We provide specialist training and capacity building support to inform and enable other humanitarian actors to address older people's needs in their humanitarian policy and programmes.
