Objectives

Heart of England Mencap is a registered charity supporting people with learning disabilities to lead an ordinary life.

Our passion is to enable people to have the opportunity to have a fulfilling life and participate in their communities as valuable citizens. We find appropriate ways to support people the live their life the way that they choose, with a focus on what they can do, rather than what they can't.

Our services are tailored to meet individual needs and people can choose which service will benefit them.

We all like to have a say in how we live our lives. So, why shouldn’t people with learning disabilities be able to… including choosing where they live, choosing who they live with, choosing who supports them and choosing how they spend their time?

Activities

Heart of England Mencap delivers a wide range of support for people with a learning disability, enabling individuals to live independently within their own home or with support that is tailored to meet their individual needs.

All of the people we support have a learning disability and/or are on the autistic spectrum. Many have complex or profound needs including also physical, mental (including dementia) and sensory impairment, attention and conduct disorder and behaviour that is challenging. We find the appropriate ways to support people to live the life they choose which focuses on an individuals’ ability rather than disability.

Our range of services include day provision delivered through our Pathway programmes, encouraging customers to further enrich their lives through education (e.g. literacy, numeracy, and ICT, life skills, including independent living and social skills), leisure and social activity.

We offer valuable Respite and short break services enabling individuals to have some time away from home - perhaps just as a respite visit, a short holiday, or as a first step in learning how to live a more independent life.

Our approach is to provide the support required – ‘just’ enough. Ensuring customer safety and security, as well as promoting companionship and independence.  We encourage customers to develop independent living skills and lead an active social life- with the reassurance of highly sensitive and person centred support always being available when it’s needed.

People are at the heart of all that we do

At Heart of England Mencap we focus on recruiting and supporting the very best staff – those with a real desire to do what they do.

We have a clear strategy that puts our beneficiaries at the heart of all that we do and as a people organisation we also value the exceptional support of our workforce, ensuring we invest in training, development, skills and competencies. Our core values underpin the way we support our teams to be the best they can and to ensure we provide the best standards of care. Our values are:

  • Honest
  • Effective
  • Aspirational
  • Respectful
  • Trustworthy

We know it is our people who deliver on our promises – helping those we support with learning disabilities to live the life they choose.

The fact is, we are nothing in our charity without our staff who tirelessly deliver our services and continually seek to improve the quality and independence of customers’ lives.

A work environment where our staff – and the commitment they make – is truly valued.
