Objectives

Healthy Minds is the working name of Calderdale Wellbeing, a mental health charity based in Halifax, West Yorkshire. We define mental health not just as the absence of distress but as a state of wellbeing in which each person realises their own potential. We recognise different factors can affect people's wellbeing and so we provide a range of services for people according to their needs.

Only 25-35% of people with mental health problems access treatment at all; the remainder self-manage to varying degrees of success.  Healthy Minds offers a user-led service to anyone who identifies as having mental health need.

We believe people are always doing the best they can and, provided with opportunities and support, they can thrive.

Activities

Our services are available to anyone who identifies as having mental health needs and include:

  • 12 peer support groups across Calderdale
  • Well Aware: MH recovery courses
  • Open Minds: MH education & anti-stigma workshops
  • Specialist welfare rights & employment support
  • Volunteer support service
  • Healthy Minds Forum which provides opportunities for people to influence local & national matters that affect mental health
  • Roshani ("Light") aims to tackle stigma in the Asian community, working with, not against, cultural beliefs and attitudes

In addition to the services provided, we are also a lead in the wider voluntary sector regarding mental health. For example, we were among 8 organisations selected nationally by Mind to pilot peer support approaches. We have also been shortlisted for national programmes by Social Care Institute of Excellence (SCIE) and the NHS Realising the Value project to lead on peer support.
