Objectives

Who we are and what we do

We are the independent champion for residents across Wokingham Borough who use health and social care services. We’re here to make sure that those running services, put people at the heart of care.

Our sole purpose is to understand the needs, experiences and concerns of residents who use health and social care services and to speak out on their behalf so their voice is heard.

We focus on ensuring that people’s worries and concerns about current services are addressed. We work to get services right for the future.

We aim to influence the decisions made by local health and social care authorities. Our success depends on building constructive partnerships with the NHS, local councils, and voluntary and community organisations. Our ambition is to be an effective agent of local change, and to reflect the highest standards of national and international best practice

How we work

We are here to listen to what you like about services and what you think could be improved. No matter how big or small the issue, we want to hear about it.

Where possible, we will let you know when changes are planned to services in our community and help you have a say. We will also encourage those in charge of local care to involve you when changes are being planned to services.

You can also speak to us to find information about health and social care services available locally.

Our approach

All Wokingham Borough residents views come first - especially those who find it hardest to be heard.

We champion what matters to you and work with others to find ideas that work. We are independent and committed to making the biggest difference to you.

Activities

  • Provide local people with advice and information (signposting) about access to health and social care services, and support for making informed choices.
  • We ensure local people are aware of their rights around health and care and we champion them in this.
  • We can help with NHS complaints.
  • We gather information and feedback from residents on their views and to understand their experiences of local health and care services through face to face interaction and engagement, as well as online surveys and forms.
  • We use this data to create recommendations and responses to gaps in health and care provision locally.
  • We also produce reports on our findings, publish them and use the findings to influence policy and planning in the commissioning of health and care services locally.
  • Promote and support the involvement of people in the commissioning and provision of local health and care services and how they are scrutinised.
  • Making the views and experiences of local people known to Healthwatch England to help it carry out its role as national champion.
  • Recommend investigation or special review of services via Healthwatch England or directly to the Care Quality Commission (CQC).
