Promote education as a core function of museums; encourage the exchange of information, ideas and research relating to the practice of museum education; foster the highest standard of educational practice; promote the role of museums in formal and informal learning; and promote professionalism in the educational work of museums


Organises annual international conference on topical education theme and programme of training days throughout the UK.


Produces a quarterly magazine of news, articles, reviews etc, and an annual journal offering a critical appraisal of the theory and practice of museum education.


Maintains a membership of approximately 2,000 people interested in advancing learning through museums, galleries and similar organisations.


Runs a network of area groups providing a programme of meetings exploring relevant issues as well as encouraging networking.


Advocates the role and value of learning through museums to key stakeholders and influencers.

Works closely with relevant organisations such as Museums, Libraries and Archives Council, Qualifications and Curriculum Authority and the Museums Association.
