Objectives

Grief Encounter exists to provide free professional bereavement support to children, young people and their families in the UK following the death of a loved one. Our team of friendly, qualified counsellors provide the highest level of tailored support on an individual and/or group basis. Founded in 2003, we currently operate in London, Essex and Bristol (including the 10% most deprived areas of the country) supporting families directly, as well as helping those nationally through our advice line and Grief Relief Kits.

Our vision is that every bereaved child in the UK can access the support needed to alleviate the pain caused by the death of a loved one. With no government funding we rely entirely on voluntary donations; that’s why we need your support, so that together we can give children and young people the help they desperately need and deserve.

Activities

Grief Encounter provides an innovative service that is flexible and bespoke, delivering a wide range of opportunities rather than a rigid approach.  Our counsellors continuously assess needs and progress to ensure a holistic, bespoke package of support for every child. We are the only charity in the UK providing this professional and varied level of support. On average, children and families see our specialist bereavement counsellors through our free Family Programme for 2 years

Our support includes:

  • One-to-one creative counselling from a certified specialist grief counsellor
  • Group therapy split into age appropriate sets
  • Residential trip for bereaved children and families, for healing and socialising
  • Workshops for families on significant dates i.e. Mother’s Day, Father’s Day etc
  • Grief Relief Kits filled with useful tools and activities to process bereavement
  • Family fun days, providing respite and a chance to socialise with other bereaved families
  • grieftalk helpline providing instant professional support via phone and email to people nationwide when they need it
