We are a Greater Manchester-based professional organisation, with over 40 years experience supporting, advising and working with victims & survivors of domestic abuse/violence.

As an organisation, our key charity’s objectives are:

  1. To provide support for victims and survivors of domestic violence and abuse for people aged 16 or over and their families, throughout the United Kingdom
  2. To advance public and professional education and understanding of the issues of domestic abuse/ violence throughout the United Kingdom.

Our organisation consists of 4 key areas:

  1. The Greater Manchester Domestic Abuse Helpline, including The Community Helpline Service with services available in Urdu & Punjabi
  2. Training for professionals, the public, victims & survivors of domestic abuse & violence
  3. Community Engagement across Greater Manchester
  4. Our volunteer service – we recruit and train volunteers to work alongside and support our services

Independent Choices Greater Manchester (ICGM) also manage and run the End the Fear website. This is a Greater Manchester focussed website whose primary focus is to provide key information and support for victims and survivors of domestic violence and abuse, as well as for their family, friends, professionals and perpetrators. You can also find regular job vacancies posted for new positions within the Domestic Abuse/Violence and VAWG (Violence Against Women and Girls) sectors. We also post and share regular news, reports and articles, especially curated for our readers and subscribers.

We run the Greater Manchester Domestic Abuse Helpline, offering advice, support and help to victims and survivors of domestic abuse/violence. Our service is also open for concerned friends and family, as well as professionals and external organisations.

Our service is a vital one - 1 in 3 women will be a victim of domestic abuse throughout their lifetime. Our charity provides essential support and help to victims navigating their way through this difficult time.

Activities

Independent Choices Greater Manchester runs the Greater Manchester Domestic Abuse Helpline.

Our Helpline is a vital service and is often the first port of call for many people experiencing domestic abuse.

We support anyone over the age of 16 who is experiencing/has previously experienced domestic abuse/violence in any form, including:

  • Physical abuse/violence
  • Threatening behaviour
  • Financial/economic abuse
  • Online abuse
  • Emotional/psychological abuse
  • Stalking/Harassment
  • Sexual abuse/violence
  • FGM
  • Controlling behaviour
  • Honour based abuse/violence
  • Coercive behaviour
  • Forced marriages

Our Helpline is open Monday – Friday, 10am – 4pm and can be accessed by professionals, as well as friends and family who want to support loved ones.

Alongside the Helpline we run the Community Helpline Language Service (CHLS), offering advice and support in Urdu and Punjabi.

Our CHLS workers have a wide knowledge around cultural issues and barriers facing BAME communities, such as Honour Based Violence/Abuse, Forced Marriage, FGM, immigration issues, no recourse to public funds, Sharia divorce, domestic work/slavery.

We’re able to access Language Line, for callers who speak other languages.

We also offer training to external agencies and organisations about domestic abuse and its impact across society, and work in collaboration with partner agencies across Greater Manchester to reach diverse audiences.
