Objectives

Somewhere between 30 and 40% of food produced globally is wasted. At the same time there are estimated to be 690 million people who do not get enough to eat.  In the UK, 2 million people are estimated to be malnourished, while the UK as a whole creates an estimated 15 million tonnes of food waste every year.

At Fountains Church we want to be part of the solution to these issues – bringing Food Justice to the broken food system we currently have.  We are one of many organisations across the country who are addressing the two problems - using food that was previously thought of as ‘surplus’ and making it available to everyone – including those who may otherwise go short.

We don’t see this food as ‘waste’ - we see a valuable resource created with energy, time, fuel, water and love.  Other resources have gone into making it, packaging it and getting it to our supermarket shelves. We believe it has value and want to stop this waste of resources.

Activities

We are setting up a kitchen in the centre of Bradford that will be making use of the food we intercept.

We will make use of this food in a number of ways.  We will be opening a café at Fountains Church and have also launched the Grace Box Project – making boxes put together by us of intercepted food and making this available to you.

In all that we do we try to encourage you to think about the food infront of you and what it is worth.  In our café we will ask you to ‘pay as you feel’ for your food - to value it as you see fit – by giving money, time or skills.  We are not a Foodbank and we do not want to segregate people based on their financial circumstances. There is enough food in the world to feed everyone. So that is what we are happy to do. Feed everyone we can.

Those in need are treated the same as those who can afford to pay.
