We are an affiliate charity to GlobalGirl Media, who empower young women and girls aged 14-22 in digital media skills. Last year, we opened the London affiliate - GlobalGirl Media UK (GGM UK) - by training our first cohort of girls from underserved communities in Wandsworth. Since then, we have supported those girls with mentors, internships and jobs in the media and also through our Newsroom to continue to find ideas for and create exciting content from their perspective. Our mission is to build 21st century skills to ignite leadership potential, create social impact and disrupt the male-dominated media narrative.
We run trainings in video camera, lighting and sound techniques and in broadcast quality documentary skills through a gender lens, creating a safe all-female space for our participants and building connections between members of diverse communities throughout London. Our graduates - the GlobalGirls - learn to report on issues that matter to them, making content and uploading it to a variety of websites, including the GlobalGirl Media Network, where girls around the world can share stories on a peer-to-peer basis. In this way, we improve individual girls' self-esteem, empower them to stand up as models in their communities and - through increased participation in the media - start to change an imbalanced landscape.
