Geograph Project Ltd is a registered educational charity in England & Wales No.1145621 – an online community and project that is now over 11 years old. We have over 5 million geo-located and dated photographs, covering 82% of the 1km grid squares of Great Britain and Ireland. These images are extensively used online by other organisations and individuals, with links back to our website through the Creative Commons License. Our website relies on hundreds of volunteers and attracts up to 15,000 visits per hour. Members and users are generally interested in exploring the built and natural environment, and photographing, researching and visiting places of interest.
In 2015, 1,047 contributors added 480,690 images to 148,772 1km grid squares. This represents about 138,250 hours of volunteer time over the year. We are proud of the steady enlargement of our collection, which benefits our many and varied users. In their own time and at their own expense, the photographers that use our website explore topics and places that interest them, because they believe that their contributions add to the long-term public and collective value of the project. Year by year, our contributors increase the collection’s historical depth, as well as its geographical coverage and detail. The photographs record change, illustrate a myriad of themes and connect contributors and users alike with the endlessly diverse environment of the British Isles.
