Objectives

Furnistore is a small local charity set up to

  • provide furniture and household goods to those who, for whatever reason, cannot afford to pay for new.
  • divert bulky waste from landfill by reusing good quality donated items.
  • provide work experience and volunteering opportunities to those who find it more difficult to access work.

Typically we have about 750 families we support in any one year, divert over 100 tonnes of bulky waste from landfill and get about 5 volunteers a year into paid employment.

Activities

  • A team of paid staff and volunteers take calls from the general public arranging collections of furniture and household goods.  The same team also arrange for deliveries of bought goods.
  • A van crew, made up of volunteers and paid staff, deliver the bought items and then collect the donations in a 3.5 tonne van.
  • The warehouse crew also put dismantled furniture together, display the items, make up emergency bedding and hygiene packs and carry out basic repairs.
  • All the volunteers are given Manual Handling training and supported through their time with us by the Volunteer Co-ordinator.  Some volunteers undertake more specific training with us such as PAT testing training.
  • The organisation is overseen by the trustees, also volunteers, who meet once a month to monitor the objectives and develop the organisation as the operating environment dictates.
