Objectives

FRU has two objectives:

  • We aim to relieve poverty by providing free legal advice and representation before Tribunals and Courts in the United Kingdom for people  who can't  afford such advice or representation.
  • Secondly we aim to assist in the education and training of law students, pupils, trainees, junior barristers and solicitors through the delivery of  our first aim.

Without our help our clients would not have legal representation at social security, employment, and criminal injuries compensation tribunals. this would mean they would have a reduced chance of success at the tribunal and wouldn't get the money they are entitled to. For social security tribunals in particular this is often likely to represent a high proportion of their income.

FRU training carries prestige for aspiring lawyers and can help them get a foot on the professional ladder whatever their background. It helps to level the playing field for young people with a non traditional legal background.

Activities

FRU trains law students and aspiring young lawyers in advocacy and welfare and employment law and provides legal supervision to enable them to represent clients at tribunal hearings.

We take referrals from advice agencies and in the case of some employment cases clients can refer themselves to us.
