Support - Portsmouth
1.Research & provide mental health support for ethnic minority communities through a web based support with information, advice & guidance and self help videos in a various languages. Add ons could include live chat and a telephone line. Target audience those online
2.Research & provide mental health support for ethnic minority communities through working directly with the communities through engaging with community groups, third sector organisations, NHS Solent, religious & spiritual groups/ faith leaders and individuals.
Support - Bangladesh & Sri Lanka (Fundraising only)
1.Establishment of a new small community mental health service in Dhaka, Bangladesh.
2.Fund raising for new equipment and additional staff at an existing community substance misuse project in Hikkaduwa, Sri Lanka.
Backgroud / Impact - Background – Local
The BME population of Portsmouth has grown from 8.14% in 2001 to 16% in 2011.
Over 100 languages are spoken in Portsmouth schools.
An estimated 22,100 people in Portsmouth aged between 18 – 64 are affected by at least one common mental health disorder.
6000 people access mental health services locally
Individuals from the BME community are underrepresented in mental health services in the statutory and third sector.
Engagement in the raising awareness of mental health and substance misuse issues in ethnic minority communities
Accessing support to improve the lives of individuals and carers effected by mental health and substance misuse issues.
Impact - International - Bangladesh - In Dhaka there are very limited community mental health or substance misuse sevices. The establishment of such a service would provide basic mental health support to the most vunerable.
Impact - International - Sri Lanka - The founder is linked to an existing charity in Hikkaduwa. They work with 800 people at one time, providing one to one therapy, community outeach and extra education clases for local children.
New CIO organisation
The new CIO organisation will have a strong service user led focus where those who use services will play an active part in the design, planning, delivery and implementation.
The aim is to start a small organisation in Portsmouth and to build a sustainable organisation using a variety of funding streams.
The founder has links to 2 projects in Bangladesh and Sri Lanka having vistied and established excellent relationships. In these countries very limited services are provided, this organisation will fund raise to support these projects to maintain and expand the services.
