Objectives

English Alive Academy, Ethiopia, offers a full time education to 220 students, aged between 3 and 12. Fifteen per cent of our students have lost one of both of their parents through disease. Our pupils endure daily hardships rooted in poverty, such as illness, unreliable access to food or clean water, and chaotic family lives. Education is one route out of poverty. However, free government schools are only able to offer part time education in classes of over 100. This has resulted in an Ethiopian adult literacy rate of only 36 %, 61% primary school enrolment and a school dropout rate of 82%. Deprived children as young as three are regularly seen out alone on the streets begging or selling chewing gum on the streets. It is not a lack of interest in education that is holding them back, but the lack of access to education. Private schools offer full time higher quality opportunities, but the charges of these schools are out of the reach to all but the top 10 % of earners. English Alive Academy serves to bridge this gap, offering a high quality free or subsidized education.

Activities

English Alive offers a full time free or subsidized education to 220 students, aged between 3 and 12. Education is one route out of poverty. However, free government schools are only able to offer part time education in classes of over 100.

Other schools offer only desks and benches, with rote learning and repetition. In comparison, with a computer room, libraries and learning support area, English Alive is able to offer more than the basic curriculum. Pupils are encouraged to discuss, create experiment, explore, and emerge at the end of the day from English Alive a more empathetic, creative, well-rounded person.
