Objectives

We operate in north-eastern Haringey (10% most deprived English LSOAs (IMD, 2019)).  We use sport to drive academic improvement and boost life chances for young people from refugee and asylum-seeking communities.

Activities

Our trained volunteers deliver: -

  • Needs Assessments, tailored weekly Maths/English tuition support
  • School-liaison service monitoring attendance and engagement with education, customising personalised programme
  • Volunteer placements with local community organisations, increasing marginalised young people’s participation, improving feelings of belonging
  • Weekly football/futsal sessions
  • Support to progress to competitive match-play
  • Coaching and refereeing training opportunities to help young people access employment.

The key outcomes are: -

  • Increased social networks and local community integration
  • Improved physical & mental health
  • Increased diversionary activities to help steer young people away from gangs, street crime and drugs
  • Increased volunteering, work placements, and pathways into employment
  • Better school / college attendance and academic progress.

In 2021/22, over 220 local children and young people participated in our programmes.  The ~92% school attendance rate achieved by this cohort was over 15% higher than a comparative group.  85 participants gained coaching / officiating qualifications and 41% started BTEC courses, on the back of over 500 hours of additional English & Maths tuition.  5 programme ‘graduates’ are currently studying at Loughborough University.  280 football / futsal training sessions were delivered and 84 competitive matches played.

The programme is free and the sports component is run by volunteers, all of whom are local with relevant life experience.  Several ‘graduates’ act as mentors and contribute to management meetings and strategy development.
