Emetophobia is a condition where an individual fears vomiting or others vomiting (but commonly both). You may often feel sick but not actually be sick. It may become a preoccupation and the only thing you think about. It is often linked to a fear that you will lose control, become very ill or that others will find you repulsive. EmetAction is the world’s first charity dedicated to emetophobia, which is an intense and life-altering phobia of vomiting. We aim to provide information and advice about the treatment and care of emetophobia to sufferers and to their families. We are founded by a collaboration of mental health professionals, academics, sufferers and recovered sufferers who are joined by the same goal: to make this common disorder more widely recognised, and treated appropriately. The objectives of EmetAction are: To provide information and advice about the treatment and care of emetophobia to sufferers and to their families To increase awareness and to educate the public into all aspects of emetophobia To advance research into all aspects of emetophobia To help those treating emetophobia and promote best practice in treating emetophobia
We are a relatively small charity set up in 2020. We are looking to recruit enthusiastic and skilled volunteers to help us to grow and widen our impact for those who need our help the most. We aim to fundraise to be able to add content and resources to our website for sufferers and their families; to provide individualised support when people contact the charity through our email address; to organise a conference for professionals, researchers and sufferers to raise awareness of current research and evidence in emetophobia, and eventually to be able to fund further research into effective treatment for the condition.
