Objectives

‘Our objective is to create safe spaces for black and brown people to Run Free without judgment, stigma or behavioural trauma’

Emancipated Run Crew (ERC) was set up in 2019 by sisters Denise and Julia Stephenson and friend Trojan Gordon who were determined to challenge the lack of diversity in grassroots running by creating a virtual space where black and brown runners can support and encourage each other whatever our running goal.  We will help you to run your own race and in doing so encourage you to Run Free!

Activities

Our purpose is:

to provide a space and a voice to those who may feel excluded from "mainstream" running community - to show that running is something that can be and should be open to all.

To provide a running family to those black and brown people, especially who do not feel particularly welcome within the running space and usual running clubs. We provide a home where every single runner is seen, heard and celebrated which tends to be counter to the narrative relating to black and brown people.

We believe that running can be a powerful tool to make positive change to a person's physical and mental wellbeing. We want to encourage greater participation from the black and brown community, regardless of age, gender, sexuality, size and ability.

Our approach is:

a) Virtual engagement and support: ERC is mainly a virtual platform, where people check in a daily basis, to encourage black and brown people to move through running and complementary sports

b) In person events: Organise running events or work with race organisers to provide low-cost access to running events where members can take part as a group.

c) Increasing representation: We work with running publications and organisations like Sport England UK Athletics, London Marathon Events and Lululemon to help support their stated aims of encouraging representation of black and brown people at a grassroots level to and change the perception that running is only open to black and brown people if they are elite athletes.

d) Activism: Working with boards and management of sports and funding bodies to increase representation by Black and brown people in senior/board positions within those organisations.
