Dundee Sea Cadets is part of the national charity Sea Cadets, which aims to give young people the best start in life. Working with young people aged 10-17, we help them see the world with confidence, gained through the challenge of nautical adventure and fun.
We have Junior Cadets (aged 10-11), Sea Cadets (aged 12-17) and Marine Cadets (aged 13-17), as well as a unit band. In total 61 cadets are enrolled and we have 31 adult volunteers who support the development and wellbeing of our young people as instructors, unit assistants and charity trustees. All these different groups work together to support cadets through personal development, gaining life skills and national qualifications in areas such as boating and leadership.
Our ambitious team of adult volunteers contribute over 4000 hours per year.
This year, we are looking to expand on our current provisions by adding additional options for our young people, including sliding seat rowing, advanced marine engineering, scholarships for residential courses and boating on the River Tay.
Our aim is to help more young people to see the future that they want – and make that future happen!
To do this, we provide support to our young people to attend residential courses that lead to national qualifications, such as in marine engineering or catering. These courses provide invaluable experiences for our cadets that can help them into employment in the local area.
During the summer months, we focus on boating activities. From water safety to experiences on the River Tay and offshore voyages, our cadets can build their skills and qualifications in a safe environment. Cadets play a central role in maintaining the boats and sharing their boating skills with other community groups.
Royal Marines Cadets (RMC) participate in all waterborne activities as well as having the opportunity to branch off and partake in more strenuous adventure training. The RMC learn fieldcraft and map reading as part of their core syllabus and take part in training exercises across the country to not only expand their core skills but to also test their fieldcraft skills.
