Objectives

The object of Dorchester Almshouses is the relief of financial hardship by the provision of social housing in the form of almshouse accommodation and ancillary equipment, services and financial relief for almspersons from the class of beneficiaries in a harmonious community, in accordance with our policies.

Vacancies are filled from the class of beneficiaries: people in financial hardship who are inhabitants of the town of Dorchester or elsewhere in the county of Dorset.

Dorchester Almshouses provides homes for life for residents who meet our eligibility criteria.  This enables residents to settle and improves their sense of stability, security and wellbeing.

Activities

Dorchester Almshouses provides almshouse accommodation in 26 flats on 2 sites in the centre of Dorchester.

The Charitable Incorporated Organisation (CIO) is managed by a Board of between 4 and 11 appointed Trustees and a maximum of 2 nominated Trustees from the Town Council.  The Mayor of Dorchester is an ex-officio honorary member of the CIO in recognition of the historical relationship between the Corporation of Dorchester and the charity .

The Trustees are local volunteers who are assisted by a small staff team in the day to day running of the charity.
