Dementia Forward was formed in 2012 by a group of professional people who were frustrated with the restrictions of working for a national charity and recognised the need for a local for local approach. Dementia is a growing problem and Dementia Forward arrived at a time when the need was growing against a background of cuts. We have successfully grown the charity across North Yorkshire, providing a wrap around service for people affected by dementia from pre diagnosis to end of life. Now commissioned by North Yorkshire County Council and clinical commissioning groups in York and North Yorkshire we are 50% funded but by design we maintain 50% voluntary income so that we can design and deliver innovative and responsive services in addition to the core elements of advice, information and support. Services range from a local help line across North Yorks to, home visits, dementia specialist nurses and wellbeing weekly activities. Our unique day services for people diagnosed with dementia in their 40s 50s and 60s offer the only support for this demographic in the whole of North Yorkshire. Finally we work closely with colleagues in the statutory and private sectors and with other partners to further the design and roll out of future improvements for the growing number of people affected by dementia.
