Figures from the 2020 Stockport Joint Strategic Needs Assessment indicate that 2,850 people in Stockport have a diagnosis of dementia, an increase of more than 900 over the previous 5 years, with prevalence rates higher than the national average. It is estimated that only 75% of people living with dementia in Stockport have been diagnosed, meaning that around 1,000 people are living with dementia without a diagnosis. By 2030, the expected prevalence of dementia is estimated to be 50% higher than this level.
There is a wealth of evidence to support the idea that music can have a positive impact on people’s mental health.
Our aim is to use music to inspire memories, conversation, and friendships in and between people living with dementia.
We hold monthly discos in the Stockport, UK, area. Our award winning discos are held at the weekends, in the early evenings. They are free to attend, and we provide a free meal. They are not restricted to the person with dementia and their carer, friends and family are welcome to come too. We encourage multigenerational groups, and our own children often attend.
We also offer mobile discos in care homes. A mobile disco is a Dementia Disco held in a care home. These discos are for people who are unable to attend a venue-based disco and therefore we bring the disco to them!
