Objectives

Dance Creative is a registered charity working across Oxfordshire. We enable people to improve their health and well-being through dance classes, projects and performances, and specialise in working with older adults and others living with long-term health needs.

Our vision is to:

Change lives through dance, for people living across Oxfordshire and beyond.

Our mission is to:

  • Improve health and well-being
  • Connect people and communities
  • Enable creativity
  • Provide opportunities for people of all ages to dance together
  • Listen, empower and support

Our participants and audiences say:

‘a lovely free flowing time when the heart can take wings’

‘I feel so much more alive’

‘a breath of fresh air’

‘what an incredible piece of humanity’

Activities

Key projects we have delivered to date include:

  • Dance for Life Oxfordshire (2016 – present) - a county-wide programme of Creative Dance Hubs, currently based in Abingdon, Bicester, Witney, and online. The programme offers regular and affordable opportunities for older adults and others to dance and socialise together through weekly Creative Dance classes followed by social time and refreshments.
  • You Can Dance! (2021 - present) – a project aimed at older people and others with long-term health conditions, particularly those who have become increasingly vulnerable and isolated or whose health has been adversely  affected by the pandemic. A pilot project was supported by Active Oxfordshire, Sport England, Cherwell District Council and Oxfordshire Health, offering a free home dance programme (home packs including a dance booklet, multi-sensory props and an online tutorial) to people as a way of motivating them to engage in physical activities within their own homes. We have received additional funding from South Oxfordshire and Vale District Councils, and Bicester Village, to roll out the project to more groups of older adults, and we would like to develop this further to target more at risk, isolated and income deprived communities across the county.
  • Creative Conversations (2021) – born from a desire to support and connect with our older participants during lockdown, we collaborated with a poet, film maker and participants, to tell their stories and experiences of the pandemic through a digital dance performance. Funded by Arts Council England, the film was premiered at The Mill Arts Centre, Banbury, in September 2021, was shown by Oxford Playhouse in May 2022, and will be displayed as part of The Museum of Oxford’s Covid-19 archive.
  • A Million Memories (2018) - a touring dance performance, funded by Awards for All, Dancin’ Oxford (Oxford City Council), and Young Dementia UK, which told the story of a daughter and mother with Early Onset Dementia. The piece was shown to audience acclaim at Cornerstone Arts Centre in Didcot, The Museum of Science in Oxford, and at the National Dementia Congress in Doncaster.
