Objectives

CSAUK helps deaf and impaired babies, children and adults gain full access to the English language by providing information about and training in Cued Speech (CS). CS is a visual version of English, a system of eight hand shapes and four positions, which completely clarify all the lip-patterns of speech. CS is quick and comparatively easy to learn and gives the deaf the full access to family life and to education, which their condition so often denies them. CSAUK matters because it is the only organisation that provides information about and training in Cues Speech in the UK.

Activities

Of CSAUK's twin objectives of providing information about and access to training in Cued Speech, we regard the former as our primary concern. This is because, without information, deaf children are not able to benefit from Cued Speech because their parents or teachers do not know about it or they don’t understand
how effective it is.

We provide information through our website, social networks, presentations to parents and professionals throughout the UK, advertisements in appropriate publications, our quarterly e-newsletter, exhibiting at conferences and exhibitions, and producing and distributing informative leaflets.

We also make available training though our Learn to Cue project which aims to deliver easily accessible and affordable Cued Speech training in a variety of formats to meet the expressed needs of our users. Training is made available through a combination of our e-learning website, UK-wide workshops, bespoke training, Skype training sessions and an annual family camping weekend in Devon with cueing activities to build
language and cueing skills.
